Japan donates large number of vehicles to Maldives Police

The Japanese government donated a large number of vehicles to the Maldives Police Service. The vehicles, comprising 54 cars and four vans, are valued at USD 4 million (MVR 61 million).

The Japanese government has donated a large number of vehicles to the Maldives Police Service.

The Japanese government has donated a large number of vehicles to the Maldives Police Service. The vehicles, comprising 54 cars and four vans, are valued at USD 4 million (MVR 61 million).

The handover ceremony took place at Iskandhar Koshi this morning, where Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori, presented the vehicles on behalf of the Japanese government.

Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau received the vehicles on behalf of the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Shujau highlighted the rising crime rates in society and stressed the need to intensify efforts to ensure the safety and security of the people.

Commissioner Shujau stated that enhancing public safety requires better equipment than what is currently available. He added that the vehicles donated by the Japanese government will help expand efforts to maintain road safety.

"With crime on the rise, it is important to enhance the capacity of the police to conduct operations. Providing the police with better resources will give them confidence in their task of ensuring safety and security," he said.

Ambassador Midori said that Japan would provide additional resources to the police.

These include operational vehicles, metal detectors, lasers, passenger craft, rubber inflatable boats and diving equipment, he said.

Japan has previously donated vehicles to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Customs as well.
