Maldives National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has stated that 23 individuals have been transferred to temporary shelter following their residences becoming uninhabitable due to storm related damage.

The intensifying of the southwest (Hulhan'gu) monsoon led to torrential rain and flooding in many areas of Maldives, with its effects felt severely in capital Male' City as well. Yesterday, Male' experienced 89.4 mm rainfall according to Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) statistics.

NDMA stated that they received 256 reports of weather related damage and need for various kinds of assistance. Five families had their residences damaged beyond being inhabitable, who were then transferred to temporary shelters. These five families consist of a total of 23 individuals.

NDMA also received reports of sewage leakage due to flooding from 12 residences.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also formed a dedicated Task Force last night to respond to weather related loss faced by citizens, and to provide swift solutions.

He also declared today as a government holiday as the heavy rains, strong winds and flooded streets impeded movement of pedestrians and motorists across the country.

Even at present, there is an active Yellow Alert issued by the MET Office from Haa Alif atoll to Alif Dhaalu atoll until 14:00 hrs today. Extremely rough seas and gusts of 50 mph were forecast.
