National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that a total of 183 houses have reported to have been flooded in the capital Malé City, out of which residents of three houses are being relocated due to the severity of the situation.

Speaking with local media outlet Mihaaru, CEO of NDPA Hisaan Hassan said that following assessments, they were able to identify three houses as unliveable in current conditions due to flooding. A total of 16 individuals are now in the process of being relocated, he revealed.

"Until we're done cleaning those places, if they [the residents] want, we will arrange the funds needed to relocate," he assured.

Hisan explained that flooding is most severe in the Maafannu ward, which is generally always the most impacted by floods. The flooding has even made some houses unsuitable for cooking and eating, he said.

Apart from the capital, Hisan said his team is monitoring the condition of the rest of the country as well, and added that two families from HA. Baarah, six families from Hoarafushi and two families from Kelaa, have also been provided assistance to.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said that 136 sacks of sand have also been placed in 48 houses in the Malé area, as a means to prevent houses from flooding.

The current weather situation in Maldives compliments the South-West monsoon which typically brings strong storms, gusts of wind and rough seas. While an orange alert was issued to parts of the Maldives yesterday, reports of fallen trees and damaged vehicles have also been lodged from the Malé region.

Maldives Meteorological Services (MET) forecasts the weather to remain rough for the next 5 days. During this time, travellers are requested to take extra precautions.
