Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has been summoned to the Parliament's Judiciary Committee to respond to a motion seeking his removal from office.

The lawmakers who attended the meeting of the Parliament's Judiciary Committee unanimously approved allowing Shameem to respond to the allegations. Therefore, after giving a five-day notice, it has been decided to put the matter on the agenda today.

The issue raised by Member Shahid states that although the PG [Prosecutor General] is not someone who should work as directed by any party in carrying out their responsibilities, Shameem has done many things contrary to this standard during his term. Therefore, the case states that under Article 228(a) of the Constitution, Shameem is considered someone who should be removed from office.

The allegations against the PG include:

- Filing sexual offense charges against former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed

- Filing a case for former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof to remain in office

- Not appealing the Safari Rape Case due to involvement of an MDP-affiliated person

-Withdrawing human trafficking charges against former Nilandhoo constituency member Ali Riza

- Withdrawing 77 cases related to alcohol

- Withdrawing 13 cases related to same-sex relations

- Deciding not to press charges in the ventilator case

- Discriminating among staff at the PG's office

Shameem was appointed to the position of PG in December 2019. His term is set to end in December.-
