A motion to dismiss Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has been submitted to Parliament by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

MP Shahid today sent a letter to the Parliament's Judiciary Committee requesting the prosecutor's dismissal. The committee has placed the matter on its agenda and approved an investigation into the proposed dismissal.

In his letter, MP Shahid argued that the Prosecutor General should not be influenced by external pressures and must act independently in the discharge of their duties. He said that the Prosecutor General's powers should be exercised in line with the policies set by the Attorney General, without personal interest or favoritism toward any party.

MP Shahid said that PG Hussain Shameem has committed several violations of these standards during his tenure.

"I believe Shameem should be dismissed from his position under Article 228A of the Constitution," he said.

Allegations against PG Shameem include:

- Filing sexual assault charges against former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed

- Filing a case against former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof to maintain his position

- Not appealing the Safari rape case due to the involvement of a person connected to the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)

- Withdrawing human trafficking charges against former Nilandhoo MP Ali Riza

- Withdrawing 77 cases related to alcohol

- Withdrawing 13 cases involving same-sex allegations

- Decision not to prosecute a ventilator fraud case

- Discriminatory practices against staff within Prosecutor General's Office
