Youth Basketball Team achieves third place in South Asian Qualifiers

Maldives' U18 National Male Basketball team has been crowned the second-runner up at the FIBA U18 Asian Championship, SABA Qualifier after defeating Bangladesh with a score of 59-57.

Maldives' U18 National Male Basketball team has been crowned the second-runner up at the FIBA U18 Asian Championship, SABA Qualifier after defeating Bangladesh with a score of 59-57.

While the Maldivian team was presented the medal and trophy after their win in the match played yesterday to select the third place winner at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, this marks the first instance of the youth team clinching such a victory at an international scale.

Maldives had also claimed success over Bangladesh during the league round which saw the participation of four teams, including India and Sri Lanka. The U18 team had won against Bangladesh, 66-55 during this match, achieving the unpreceded and historical feat of securing the youth team's first win across the global platform.

However, following this match, Maldives had faced defeat in the match that met them with India, 44-117 while the next match against Nepal also saw Maldivian team's defeat with a score of 76-102, ending the league round in third place as well.

Performing under the guidance and instructions of Coach Mohamed Zilaal (Zila), the youth team is captained by Mohamed Aik Wajeeh.

The remaining players of the team include Aik Ahmed Mauroof, Mohamed Naaf Irusham, Aldhan Aik Rameez, Kyle Abdulla Nasheed, Mohamed Aidhin Ahmed, Ahmed Leem Hussain Shifau, Ismail Zuiz Mohamed, Layan Ahmed Shameel, Mohamed Kaif Shahran, Abdulla Alaan Irufaan and Ibrahim Nauhaan Naaiz.

The champions of the tournament was awarded to India, who had triumphed the finals against Sri Lanka yesterday with a score of 87-62.
