The Maldivian government has urged Maldivians not to travel to Ukraine due to fears of war.

Foreign Ministry released a statement on Tuesday urging Maldivians in the island nation to not travel to Ukraine amidst the deteriorating situation in the country. They further advised Maldivians currently in Ukraine to remain vigilant and follow Ukraine’s decisions regarding the matter.

Ministry has further urged all Maldivians in Ukraine to register in the Maldivian Mission in Germany, which is the closest Maldivian Mission to Ukraine.

The notice to not travel was issued as fear of Russia invading Ukraine has been high, as Russian military currently has the nation surrounded. Currently various foreign embassies in Ukraine have been closing, and diplomats have been leaving the nation as well.

Foreign Ministry has previously stated that they were closely monitoring the situation of the approximately 50 Maldivians in Ukraine. However the government have not commented on the repatriation of Maldivians though.

The threat of war has been looming as Russia has Ukraine’s borders surrounded with over 150,000 soldiers. While Russia deny they intend to invade Ukraine, they do not show any signs of withdrawing their troops. United States warn that Russia may invade Ukraine at any moment and that they will not hesitate to take strong measures, if so.
