Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has started using a dedicated barge in the supply of water to boats under the offshore bunkering services provided by the government in Ihavandhippolhu.
The MPL barge has left for the northern atolls yesterday. MPL provided water supplies to a boat in September as well. At the time, it was done through carrying water tanks on a landing craft.
MPL said that this barge was built in their dockyard in Thilafushi.
The barge has the capacity to carry 200 tonnes of water. MPL said that from now on, this barge will be used for water bunkering services. MPL said that a water plant will be placed on the barge soon, allowing for water production on board.
MPL Managing Director Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim said that in light of the orders received now, an estimated revenue of USD 1.5 million dollars can be received each month.
Services being provided at the offshore bunkering port include pilotage services, crew changes, ship to ship services, speedboat services, food supply, medicine supply, tug service and maintenance services. MPL is working on acquiring more tugs necessary for the broadening of services.
