President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the government aims to set up an early warning system which will send text message alerts warning of weather and disasters.
Speaking at high level meeting of COP29 summit ongoing in Azerbaijan, the President said that the government aims to broaden forecasting capacity and set up an early warning system.
He announced that the work is being proceeded currently in collaboration with councils and organizations. Under this, it is a high priority of the government to strengthen alert systems and impact based forecasting systems, he said.
The President described early warning systems as 'an investment in livelihoods and prosperity', adding that it is an important step even when considering economic stability.
The President reflected on how the 2004 tsunami in Asia affected Maldives as well, causing a large number of deaths and billions of rufiya in loss. Early warning systems would, he said, contribute towards saving many lives in such an instance.
President Muizzu said that this matter would be given high precedence in drafting the twenty year master plan for development which is due for completion next year. Adding that Maldives has made positive strides forward in setting up such an early warning system, he appealed for international support and resources in, especially in marine forecasting.
The plans include setting up a database to record losses caused via disasters and digitalizing collating of data to assist in streamlining emergency responses.
