Elections Commission (EC) on Sunday announced the official results of the Bar Council elections held on June 13.

The election took place at two polling stations situated in capital Male' and Addu City respectively. A total of 1,600 lawyers were eligible to cast ballots in the election.

As per the official results, six executive committee members were elected in addition to the Bar Council's president, vice president and Attorney General. A total of 19 lawyers contested for executive member positions on the council.

Executive members of the Bar Council

1- Mohamed Faisal - 631 votes

2- Former Prosecutor General, Ahmed Muizzu - 627 votes

3- Former Civil Court Judge Aishath, Shujune Mohamed - 445 votes

4- Secretary General of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Anas Abdul Sattar - 361 votes

5- Mohamed Aseel - 356 votes

6- Former parliament member, Anara Naeem - 343 votes

Despite a delay in announcing executive committee members, the elections watchdog revealed the Bar Council's President and Vice President the previous day.

The position of President was secured by Maumoon Hameed, a lawyer prominently involved in representing political figures at court. Attorney General in Mohamed Nasheed's presidency, Abdulla Muizzu was elected Vice President after contesting against former Civil Court Judge Mohamed Haleem.

Executive committee members will serve for three-year periods and cannot be elected for more than two consecutive terms. The president, however, can only hold the position for a single term.

The Bar Council, established under the recently passed Legal Professions Bill, is mandated to investigate disciplinary cases against lawyers, issue legal licences to practice, maintain their integrity and improve the quality of law education.
