Elections Commission (EC)'s President Ahmed Shareef on Wednesday announced that a budget of MVR 1.2 million was allocated for Bar Council Elections, although the expected expenditure is lower.
Shareef told local media Mihaaru that a large amount was allocated to ensure there was no shortage in funds. According to EC, the amount was decided assuming that voting will take place on 30 islands.
However, considering the number of lawyers registering to vote, the number of islands may decrease, cutting down election costs.
"We will decide which islands [to establish polling stations in] after the final registration", Shaeef said.
The elections watchdog is currently conducting discussions with Ministry of Finance over printing the ballots for the election.
EC clarified that ballot printing was not being outsourced this time due to time constraints.
Bar Council's Executive Committee consists of the President, Vice President, Attorney General and an additional six members.
All the positions except that of Attorney General will be decided by a vote among lawyers.
Bar Council Elections are scheduled for July 13.
