Today's meeting of the Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions, to which members of Maldives Media Council (MMC) was summoned to respond to complaints against the council, has been held closed.
MMC members were summoned to a meeting of the committee at 11:30 hrs this morning.
Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP for Kolamaafushi Ibrahim Didi proposed that the meeting be held closed. This was seconded by PNC's Fuvahmulah MP Ibrahim Hussain.
Ibrahim Didi cited conflict of interest as a reason for holding the meeting closed.
Committee Chair PNC MP for Maafushi constituency Hussain Riza Adam said that the members of MMC were summoned in relation to letters and complaints received by the committee. However, no further details regarding these letters and complaints were disclosed.
However, State media PSM has earlier submitted a complaint to the parliament regarding Adhadhu Online's documentary 'Skeelan' having been aired live on their channel through it winning the Audio/Video category in Investigative Journalism in last month's Journalism Awards held by the MMC.
PSM accused MMC of having conspired to air the documentary, which they said is against media content policies, on their channel through prior planning.
The President's Office has also filed a complaint with the parliament claiming that MMC has not been taking action against media outlets that spread false information.
In a previous committee meeting, MMC has said that most of the complaints they have received within the year have been from the President's Office.
