Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said today that the dinghy was spotted about 10 miles northwest of Fuvahmulah.
MNDF said that it is believed that the three persons found aboard are of Somalian origin.
Police have said that it is believed that the dinghy with the Somalian people had been lost at sea.
The three individuals have now been taken to Fuvahmulah with the assistance of the Coast Guard.
Although there have been several cases of Somalian pirates in the Indian Ocean during the Northeast monsoon, there is no indication that the persons found today were involved in any such activity.
