PGO has added more charges against Bassam Adeel Jaleel.
More charges were added against former Football Association of Maldives (FAM)'s President Bassam Adeel Jaleel today for allegedly misappropriating the funds FIFA gave to FAM.
The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) said Bassam has been charged with the embezzlement of USD 1.2 million from FAM to buy an apartment in Amin Construction's Amin Avenue.
If convicted, the Bassam will face a prison term of one year, seven months and six days.
The second charge is for purchasing an eight bed, ten bath apartment from Amin Avenue, block A's 12th and 13th floor. According to PGO, all MVR 25 million needed to purchase the apartment, including booking and commitment fees were paid to Amin Construction by transferring funds out of FAM's US Dollar account.
If convicted of money laundering, Bassam would face a fine between MVR 100,000 and MVR one million as well as a five to fifteen year prison sentence.
Additionally, PGO is also moving to recover MVR 1.2 million as compensation for the damages to FAM, and to seize the penthouse to the state.
PGO said it is also preparing to prosecute the FAM employees involved in the fraud. The office said more charges would be filed with the court as the active investigation continues.
PGO charged Bassam with fraud and money laundering in January with hearings already underway.
