One of the two arrested in the case is a police officer.
Two individuals, including a police officer, who were arrested on Tuesday for attempting to smuggle cigarette cartons from the departure terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA) have been released on conditional bail when brought to court for a remand decision.
Maldives Customs reported the case to the police after discovering cigarette cartons concealed in trash bags being taken out of the airport.
The arrested individuals were:
- Ahmed Afzal, 45
- Yoosuf Nazeer, 38 (a police officer stationed at the airport)
A senior police official said that Nazeer has been suspended from duty following his arrest. He added that the case will be investigated according to police procedures.
