Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has said today that the government has decided to provide a tuna can case of 48 cans to each household for the upcoming Ramadan.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced this initiative in November last year.

MIFCO said that this necessitates the production of 100,000 more tuna cans than usual for this Ramadan, and the company is now preparing for this.

Last year, the government issued 1.6 million kg of staple foods to 82,000 households. They also granted MVR 142 million worth discounts on water and electricity supplies.

At present, a case of regular tuna in oil cans is priced at MVR 560, with a can priced at MVR 16. Considering the market rate, providing cases of tuna cans to 82,000 households would mark up to MVR 46 million in cost.

MIFCO said that the production is being conducted in collaboration with STO.

In the ceremony held in November to mark one year in office, President Muizzu announced that this Ramadan, tuna cans will be provided to households instead of staples.

MIFCO said that production would be completed in February, and distribution will commence then. They are currently drafting plans on how the distribution will be organized.
