Maldivian sentenced to life in prison in Sri Lanka for drug offence

A Sri Lankan court has sentenced a Maldivian to life in prison for a drug related case on Friday.

Sri Lankan newspapers had reported that a Maldivian man was sentenced to life in prison over the possession of 265 grams of heroin. The newspaper did not disclose any further information about the man. The man was arrested in in Banbalapitiya of Colombo over six years ago in 2016.

Although another person was also charged in this case, they were not found guilty.

According to Sri Lankan law, possession of drugs to a certain amount can be punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty. However, the death penalty has not been imposed in Sri Lanka in recent history.
