President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih promised that he will not give any unlawful orders to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on Tuesday night.
Speaking at the Oath Taking Ceremony of the 64th Basic Training Programme of MNDF, President Solih called upon the MNDF soldiers to be steadfast in taking civic and security responsibilities which part of the armed forces duties.
"Most certainly I will not issue any orders to you that is unconstitutional," said President Solih.
Meanwhile, former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom is accused of issuing orders to MNDF that go against the constitution. Additionally, former President's Mohamed Nasheed and Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik were also criticized involving MNDF in political activities of their governments.
President Solih said that the purpose of a soldier should not be centred on fighting and winning wars. He added that soldiers would gain more pleasure in serving the army through maintaining peace and harmony in the country.
Moreover, President Solih also recognised MNDF personnel face trouble with affordable accommodation just like the citizens of Maldives. Hence, this administration would work on speeding up the progress of the SIFCO Hiya housing flats that are specifically designed for armed force personnel.
Furthermore, President Solih advised the newly sworn in soldiers to uphold the laws and regulations of the country, to remain steadfast in the Islamic faith and to put forward the countries welfare.
