Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi stated on Monday that the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will focus mainly on strengthening the diplomatic ties with neighbouring nations.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of the military training programme ‘Dhosthee' amongst the Indian and Sri Lankan army forces, Defence Minister Mariya declared that President Solih guarantees to establish stability in the region.

Furthermore, the minister added that such joint military training is beneficial and important for a small country such as Maldives.

Since 1992, the ‘Dhosthee’ training camp has bi-annually, marking its 14th round this year. Sri Lankan forces joined the programme in 2012.

Director General of the Indian Coast Guard Rajendra Singh stated that he has been closely observing Dhosthee's training programme, highlighting his belief that it is a step in the right direction for defence and security.

Maldivian Coast Guard's Major Rizmee Waleed clarified that although the opening ceremony for the programme was held on Monday, the main training sessions will start on Tuesday.

The training activities include lifesaving operations and also developing skills to prepare troops against attacks from pirates.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Saleem said that approximately 200 people from the three nations will be involved in the training programme.
