People's National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group Leader and MP for Inguraidhoo constituency Ibrahim Falah has decided that for the next year, he will withdraw salary after a deduction of 10 percent.
Last Wednesday, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that 10 percent will deducted for the next two years from the salaries of political appointees, Parliament Members, and leaders of State Owned Enterprises.
In a post on social media platform X, Falah said that in order to offer support to the measures being implemented by the President to reduce State expenditure, he will also affect a 10 percent reduction of his salary for one year beginning from November this year.
Members of Parliament receive a salary of MVR 82,500. This includes MVR 42,500 as basic salary, plus MVR 20,000 as living allowance, and MVR 20,000 as committee allowance.
MVR 7.67 million is currently spent in a month on the salaries of the 93 sitting MPs.
Following the President's announced that he will forego 50 percent of his own salary, Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla also pledged to do the same.
The Speaker's salary is now MVR 73,125, with MVR 36,562.5 being the amount he will receive after the 50 percent deduction.
The President, however, stated that the reductions will not be applicable to those who receive salaries below MVR 12,000.
