Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal said today that Attorney General Ahmed Usham has been consulted on canceling agreements for 22 islands allocated for resort development where no progress has been made.

Speaking in parliament, Minister Faisal said 58 islands, allocated for resort development, have not yet been used for tourism purposes. He noted that 15, 20, and even 30 years have passed since these islands were designated for resort development.

The Minister said that the Economic Council has prepared a paper to engage with those who were granted these islands, in order to understand their efforts and address the challenges hindering development.

However, for the 22 islands where no work has begun, legal counsel has been sought to terminate the agreements, and once received, the process will be implemented, the minister said.

In the past, similar cases have been brought to court, resulting in minimal compensation for canceled agreements.

To address this, the Tourism Act has been amended, and these amendments will soon be submitted to parliament, Faisal added.
