The first sitting of the third session of the 20th People's Majlis, held today after a two month's long recess, has concluded in half an hour.
The third session has commenced today after a week's postponement from the previously set date. Today's agenda included forwarding four motions submitted by the Speaker to committees, first hearings of three bills and voting on three bills submitted by committees.
The four motions submitted by the Speaker are;
1. Parliamentary approval for three cabinet ministers
2. Appointment of a new High Commissioner to India
3. Appointment of a member to the Elections Commission
4. Parliamentary approval for Maldives' participation in the International Atomic Energy Agency
All four matters have been forwarded to relevant committees today.
The agenda further states that three reports were submitted by the Public Accounts Committee. These are;
-Two reports after reviewing audit reports from 2012 to 2017 of the Environment Ministry and Defence Ministry
- Report on assessment of expenditure on building a two storey building on Noonu Atoll Council land
Once Chair of the Public Accounts Committee Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim submitted these reports, two hours were allocated for debate on them. However, only two MPs applied to participate in the debate: Huraa MP Anara Naeem and Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarak.
As no other MPs applied to participate in the debate, and all matters on the agenda had been attended to, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim, who was presiding over the meeting, decided to ask for votes in the morning session.
After voting separately to pass the three reports submitted, the meeting was concluded within half an hour of starting.
The only committee meeting scheduled for today is the 241 Committee meeting scheduled for this morning. This meeting is being held closed.
