Supreme Court has decided to hold another hearing on Monday in the case appealing to revoke non-acceptance of new evidence in the trial against former President Abdulla Yameen.
This is the second hearing in the case submitted by the State five months ago. The case is being heard by Judge Aisha Shujune Mohamed, Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Judge Mohamed Ibrahim.
The hearings in the case commenced in November last year.
In December 2022, Criminal Court convicted Yameen on charges of accepting bribery of USD 1 million and money laundering in the lease of Aarah. He was sentenced to an 11 year prison term. The High Court later revoked the convictions and ordered a retrial, stating that new evidence submitted by the State cannot be accepted.
High Court ordered the lower court to issue a retrial without taking this new evidence into consideration.
Prosecutor General's Office said today that the order to not accept the new evidence goes against prior rulings of the Supreme Court. PG Office said that the case appeals for an order directing the lower court to reconsider their decision to not accept new evidence.
PG Office said that this would not affect the High Court ruling ordering a retrial.
Criminal Court did commence hearings in accordance with the High Court order. The hearings were halted after Yameen's legal team requested for the case be paused until a decision is reached by the Supreme Court in the appeal case.
High Court also repealed the conviction of former parliamentarian for Felidhoo constituency Yoosuf Naeem in the same case, and ordered a retrial.
