The moment of silence was observed at 09:23hrs this morning, the time when the tsunami is recorded as having hit Maldives on December 26, 2004.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu led the moment of silence, with senior government officials, cabinet ministers, and employees of the President's Office alongside him.
Staff of offices in the Male' area also lined up outside their offices to join the observance of the moment of silence.
This is practiced every year, with the day now being marked annually as National Unity Day.
The 2004 tsunami led to 82 deaths and 26 people going missing in the Maldives.
Many of the islands faced severe damage, with about 22,000 people left in need of housing. While 191 islands were affected to different levels, the island of Raa atoll Kandholhudhoo, Thaa atoll Vilufushi, Meemu atoll Madifushi and some other islands were completely destroyed.
