President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that co-chairing the UN Summit for the Future has been a valuable opportunity to enhance the Maldives' global reputation and achieve positive outcomes.

He also said that the event attended by 190 UN member states and around 20 international organizations also presented a significant potential to advance the country's digital economy and digitalization in line with the government's policy.

"To co-chair such an important session at the UN on behalf of the Maldives is a great opportunity to advance our key policy of expanding digitalization and growing the digital economy," he said.

He also expressed optimism about the broader international exposure the Maldives would gain from the event.

"This is an opportunity to raise the Maldives' profile in the international community. Hopefully, the results will be positive."

He further added that the summit could help secure the necessary support to boost the Maldives' digital economy.

During the UN Summit for the Future's session on "Interactive Dialogue 3: Towards a Common Digital Future," President Muizzu addressed the issue of digital inequity, highlighting that over a third of the global population, particularly in developing countries, do not have internet access. He made three key recommendations to bridge this digital divide during the event.

President Muizzu highlighted the importance of investing in digital skills and promoting youth participation in the digital economy, with a focus on developing local expertise.

He also stressed on the need to protect consumer rights in the digital space, citing challenges like unauthorized access, account hijacking, and data privacy concerns.

President Muizzu said that while Maldives has established the National Cybersecurity Agency to address such issues, resources are required to build a resilient cybersecurity infrastructure.
