The Elections Commission (EC) of the Maldives on Sunday, announced that the 2023 Presidential Election will be held on September 9.
The Commission revealed the specific dates for the election, which include:
- Publishing voters registry: May 2 – June 2
- Submitting candidacy: July 23 – August 3
- Nominating election observers and monitors: July 25 – August 13
- Candidate number announcement: August 9
- Presidential campaign: August 10 – September 8
In December, the Vice President of the EC Ismail Habeeb said that he grounds of the national radio station Dhivehi-Raajjeyge Adu will be used as the main hub for the presidential election in 2023. However, on Sunday he said that the the location has still not been confirmed.
In recent elections, Jamaluddin School’s old building was used as the EC’s main hub during elections, but the structure is being demolished to construct the new Arabiyyaa School.
“As we are preparing to hold the presidential elections on September 9, the important dates may change if we face delays in securing a place where we can set up office,” Habeeb said.
Meanwhile, the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) will be holding its primary election on January 28 to select its presidential candidate for the upcoming election. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed are contesting in this election.
The main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s candidate, former President Abdulla Yameen, recently lost his eligibility to run in the elections after being given an 11-year jail sentence. He was convicted of bribery and money laundering.
Other major political parties, including Maldives National Party (MNP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and Jumhoory Party have said that they will nominate candidates of their own.
