Statistics published by Maldives Customs Service has shown that in 2023 alone, 15,551 motorcycles were imported into Maldives.
In a post shared on social media platform X in relation to this year's Statistics Day, Customs said that 15,551 motorcycles and 1347 cars had been brought into Maldives in 2023.
It was not stated how many of these are in capital Male' City, which sees the highest rate of traffic congestion in the country.
Records from previous years indicate that over 10,000 vehicles are newly registered annually. Of these, 90 percent are motorcycles, with most being driven in Male' area.
On many occasions, governments have made efforts to tackle the issue of traffic congestion and increased numbers of vehicles being brought into the country. In December last year, the current government set up a special committee to look into measures that can be taken to address challenges faced by vehicle congestion.
