President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Abdul Haseeb Ismail, as a member of the Elections Commission (EC) today.
The letter of appointment was presented to Haseeb by the President during a ceremony at the President's Office this morning.
Haseeb's appointment was approved by Parliament on November 5. President Muizzu had proposed only Haseeb's name to Parliament from among the candidates who applied for the post.
Haseeb's appointment follows the end of the term of EC President Fuad Thaufeeq on November 23.
Haseeb previously served as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, having been appointed to the position in 2019 during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
With Haseeb's appointment, Elections Commission now comprises of him, Member Hassan Zakariyya, and Dr Mohamed Zahir. Before his appointment, three posts on the commission remained vacant. Meetings of the commission can be held in the presence of more than two-thirds of its members.
Former Election Commission Vice President Ali Nashath and Member Mohamed Asif have been removed from their positions.
The names of former Human Rights Commission Vice President Mohamed Zahid and former Election Commission Secretary General Abdul Rahman Solah Rasheed have been sent to Parliament for approval for the two vacant posts.
