Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured 24 out of the 25 constituencies representing cities, in the parliamentary elections held on April 6 and is the most successful bid for parliament by MDP so far.

As per tentative results, MDP failed to secure the Vilimale' constituency due to former deputy attorney general and independent candidate Ahmed Usham being voted in by its constituents. Although the final ballots are yet to be accounted for, it is understood that Usham is poised for victory.

MDP won the following seats;

- Male' City: 14

- Addu City: 7

- Fuvahmulah City: 3

Since the establishment of multi-party systems and the adoption of the parliamentary system in 2008, MDP has consistently received large amounts of support and success in constituencies related to Male' and Addu.

This is the first election since Fuvahmulah met the population criteria and deemed a city.

MDP, the main party of the ruling coalition, won the parliament majority with 68 out of 87 constituencies. Among the newly elected MDP lawmakers is Mohamed Nasheed for Machangolhi Central, becoming the first former president to be elected to parliament.

Despite the 2009 parliament being held in an MDP-led administration, the party failed to secure a clear majority then. MDP was only able to win 26 seats on each occasion during the past two parliamentary elections.

Tentative results of the Parliamentary Election 2019:

- MDP: 68 seats

- Jumhooree Party: 7 seats

- Progressive Party of Maldives: 4 seats

- Maldives Development Alliance: 2 seats

- People's National Congress: 1 seat

- Independent candidates: 6 seats
