Parliament Secretariat, on Sunday, announced that the oathtaking ceremony for the 87 MPs elected in Saturday's parliamentary election would be held on May 28.

According to parliamentary regulations, a one-month recess will commence after the end of the first term which is conducted from February to April. The first term's conclusion also marks the end of the term for all MPs elected in 2014.

The second term will commence in early June along with the newly sworn in parliamentarians.

Several of the parliamentarians elected in 2014 failed to maintain their seats. Several of these members contested on behalf of opposition parties including Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC).

Temporary PNC president Abdul Raheem Abdulla bid for re-election as Fonadhoo MP failed while Ahmed Nihan, leader of PPM's parliamentary group, was also unable to secure the seat for Thinadhoo South constituency.

Among the parliamentarians re-elected for another term are Kinbidhoo MP Ahmed Nashiz, Baarah MP Ahmed Abdulla and Maafannu Central MP Ibrahim Rasheed.

Tentative results of the Parliamentary Election 2019:

- MDP: 68 seats

- Jumhooree Party: 7 seats

- Progressive Party of Maldives: 4 seats

- Maldives Development Alliance: 2 seats

- People's National Congress: 1 seat

- Independent candidates: 6 seats

MDP was able to secure 24 out of the 25 constituencies in Male', Fuvahmulah and Addu, the three designated cities in Maldives.
