The Parliament’s Financial Committee summoned Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ahmed Naseer and former head of MMA’s Financial Intelligence Unit Abdulla Ashraf for questioning.
In the meetings that were confidential, the two were questioned about the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)’s report on Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement publicized on February 14.
The Financial Committee has the authority to keep their meetings confidential.
In the largest corruption case in the history of Maldives, the MMPRC corruption saw the embezzlement of over MVR 1.3 billion, acquired via island and lagoon leases for tourism, through a private company SOF Pvt Ltd.
According to the report by ACC, the commission investigated the cases of 57 islands.
Although USD 77.5 million are due in acquisition cost for the leases, MMPRC had only received USD 12.5 million.
Moreover, the report states that MMPRC is yet to receive USD 59.4 million, and a majority of the amount that was received was deposited to SOF.
