Parliament's Finance Committee on Sunday approved Ali Hashim for the governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
Hashim was nominated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on August 28. It was then sent to the parliamentary committee for approval.
Local media Mihaaru reported that Hashim approved by the Committee after he was interviewed.
The final decision on the appointment will be made after taking a vote in the parliament.
The post of Governor has been vacant since Ahmed Naseer, who was most recently filling the post, resigned in July.
Hashim was the first Finance Minister during former President Mohamed Nasheed's government. He was minister for two years from 2008 to 2010.
