Police summoned former Tourism Minister Zameer to present himself at the Police Headquarters, on Thursday, in connection to the ongoing investigation into the infamous Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.

Zameer, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s Vice-President, was also summoned earlier on Wednesday for questioning at the Police Headquarters.

Following the summons, PPM's Secretary General Mohamed Hussain Shareef accused Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) of making a move to detain the opposition leadership.

When the corruption scandal unfolded, Zameer did not hold a position in the administration, he was appointed as Tourism Minister in 2015 by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Prior to his abrupt removal from power, then Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb served as Tourism Minister.

Slapped a 33-year jail term over his involvement in the largest corruption scandal in Maldives, Adeeb was immediately imprisoned while the former Managing Director of MMPRC Abdulla Ziyath was handed an 8-year prison sentence over his involvement in the case.

According to the Adeeb, the mastermind behind the scandal was the former President himself and several top government officials also had hand in the embezzlement.

This is the first time the Police have summoned a political figure for investigation during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.
