A number of local companies celebrated International Men's Day in style on Monday, expressing appreciation for the hard work of their male work force.

Amongst the firms were Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) and Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). MIRA threw a red carpet welcome for male staff, who were gifted ‘golden crowns’ by their female peers. The company also held a special morning tea and celebrated the day by cutting a cake. MMA participated in the celebrations, with their female staff gifting flowers to their male peers at the beginning of the work day.

International Men’s Day is an annual international event celebrated every year on November 19 since Jerome Teelucksingh revived the event to honour his father’s birthday. It also marks the qualification of Trinidad and Tobago’s football team to the World Cup in 1989.

The theme for 2018 is to be “Positive Male Role Models” and focuses on giving men and boys positive role models to look up to. Furthermore, according to Teelucksingh, it is also an ‘attempt to remove the negative images and the stigma associated with the men in our society’.

International Women’s Day, on the other hand, has been traditionally celebrated colourfully in the Maldives. Therefore some have expressed their concerns on social media over the lack of celebrations in Maldives for International Men’s Day.
