Opposition coalition filed a case at the police Wednesday night, seeking to stop President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom from allegedly fleeing the country.

Speaking to the press outside Police Headquarters, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s chairperson Hassan Latheef accused the outgoing president of planning to flee amidst several graft allegations against him.

"He must be stopped from leaving [the Maldives] as there are several corruption and other cases being investigated against him," said the lawyer.

"President Yameen has himself admitted to embezzlement and corruption," he went on, adding that the opposition had elected Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the recently held Presidential Election, to look into the crimes committed by President Yameen and ensure justice.

Regarding the case, Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim also emphasised the danger of allowing a figure, who is in a position that can destroy evidence, to leave the country.

The opposition has filed the case amidst rumours of the president planning to fly abroad on Thursday. While there has not been any official statements regarding this, ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) asserts that President Yameen would not flee.
