Parliament has today approved the appointment of former Supreme Court Judge Abdul Ghani Mohamed to the post of Chief Justice.
With former Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan resigning last month, three individuals applied for the post of Chief Justice. In addition to Ghani, this included Family Court Judge and former Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed and former High Court Chief Judge Shujau Usman.
After conducting reviews and interviews, the Judicial Service Commission recommended Ghani for the post of Chief Justice. Second on the list was Abdulla Mohamed. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu then forwarded the names to parliament in the same order.
Ghani's appointment was approved today through unanimous votes in favour in parliament today.
Ghani will officially assume responsibilities of the post after taking oath of office in the presence of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Ghani is the fifth Chief Justice appointed since the ratification of the new constitution.
Ghani served as a Civil Court Judge from 2000 to 2004. From 2004 to 2018, he served as a High Court Judge. He was then appointed to the Supreme Court bench, but was later dismissed in December 2019.
Ghani was appointed as a member of the Tax Appeal Tribunal in 2024.
