Parliament's Judiciary Committee has today approved the appointment of former Supreme Court Judge and Tax Appeal Tribunal President Abdul Ghani Mohamed as Chief Justice.

With former Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan resigning last month, three individuals applied for the post of Chief Justice. In addition to Ghani, this included Family Court Judge and former Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed and former High Court Chief Judge Shujau Usman.

After conducting reviews and interviews, the Judicial Service Commission recommended Ghani for the post of Chief Justice. Second on the list was Abdulla Mohamed. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu then forwarded the names to parliament in the same order.

Parliament's Judiciary Committee voted unanimously today to appoint Ghani as Chief Justice. The final decision on the appointment will be made through a vote taken on the parliament floor.

Ghani served as a Civil Court Judge from 2000 to 2004. From 2004 to 2018, he served as a High Court Judge. He was then appointed to the Supreme Court bench, but was later dismissed in December 2019.

Ghani was appointed as a member of the Tax Appeal Tribunal in 2024.
