Airspace at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be closed for 1.5 hours on Saturday evening to facilitate the official opening ceremony of the airport’s new terminal.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Lam'aan told Mihaaru News that the closure will take place from 8.30pm to 10.00pm.
The event will coincide with the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence and feature public screenings, special shows, and celebrations across Male', Hulhumale', Vilimale', and Addu City.
Customers visiting Cafe's in the area between Seahouse and Carnival, which have a direct view of the airport, will have a view of the ceremony and be served buffets organized by MACL.
Special shows are scheduled in Hulhumale' Central Park and Addu City. A screen will also be installed at the Hiyaa flats in Hulhumale'.
Passengers travelling during the closure time will be transported to the terminal in MACL vehicles from the police checkpoint. Private vehicles will not be allowed to enter the airport at that time.
“Check-in will continue as normal. From 7pm onwards, passengers will be transported by MACL vehicles,” Lam’aan said.
“We have made arrangements to ensure the public won’t face difficulties during this period.”
The new terminal, built by Saudi Binladin Group, spans 78,000 square metres and can handle up to 7.5 million passengers a year. The total cost of the project is estimated at USD 600 million (MVR 9.2 billion).
MACL has also invited all former Maldivian presidents to the ceremony.
