Prosthetist Ibrahim Shafeeu has offered to make and donate an artificial arm to a Bangladeshi man who lost his right arm in a recent speedboat accident near a resort in Noonu atoll.
Shafeeu, who returned to Maldives two months ago after completing his studies in prosthetics and orthotics in Cambodia, said he was moved by the victim’s story and wanted to help.
The 30-year-old Bangladeshi national was collecting sea cucumbers when he was struck by a speedboat at around 10:30pm on May 12. His arm was later amputated at the elbow.
“I have that interest,” said Shafeeu, who is from Dhangethi island.
He now works at the Prosthetics and Orthotics Lab in Hulhumale' Hospital, which opened in August 2023 with support from the Government of India.
The lab operates in partnership with the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India and marks the first time such services have been locally available in Maldives. Previously, prosthetic limbs had to be custom-made abroad, with measurements taken locally and sent overseas, often a lengthy and expensive process.
Prosthetics are artificial limbs used by those who have lost arms or legs due to accidents or congenital conditions. Orthotics, meanwhile, are mobility aids such as specialized footwear designed for individuals with physical disabilities.
Shafeeu, who shared videos of his training in Cambodia, said he intends to custom-make the arm for the victim.
The injured man is currently receiving treatment at ADK Hospital.
Police have searched the sea twice in an attempt to retrieve the severed limb, but it has not been found.
Authorities have questioned several people, including the captain of the speedboat. While no arrests have been made, police say investigations are ongoing and action will be taken once the necessary steps are completed.
