Police arrested the manager of the Life water plant in Kaafu atoll Himmafushi island in connection to the death of an expatriate, who was employed at the plant.

Mohamed Imthiyaz was arrested on August 30 and has been remanded for a period of 12 days.

Following the death of the 38-year-old Bangladeshi national, the manager was also suspended from his position.

Police have arrested another local in connection to the death as well. The man, 33, is a former policeman who oversaw the security of the water plant. He is said to have close relations with Mohamed Imthiyaz, the manager of the water plant.

The magistrate court in Thulusdhoo island of the same atoll has ordered to remand the man until the end of his trial.

Shedding light on the case, the managing director of Life’s operator Happy Market and former captain of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Ali Ihsaan, stated that the healthcare centre in Himmafushi had initially declared that the expat worker died of cardiac arrest. However, the case was turned over to the police for further investigation after other expatriate workers at the water plant alleged that the Bangladeshi had been abused.

Police are yet to disclose information regarding the cause of his death as the investigation is still ongoing. However, a resident of Himmafushi accused the two arrested locals of abusing and intimidating the expatriate workers employed at the water plant.

“We don’t know if the Bangladeshi died of violence. But Police are looking into it because there are suspicions that the manager and the [other] arrested man had something to do with it.”

The deceased’s body was kept in Galolhu Mortuary in capital Male City briefly before being returned to Bangladesh.
