Parliament’s Finance Committee has approved the appointment of Aishath Asna Handhy as Deputy Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
The position became vacant in March following the resignation of former Deputy Governor Ahmed Imad.
Asna appeared before the committee on Wednesday, after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu submitted her nomination for parliamentary approval.
The committee unanimously endorsed her appointment, citing her qualifications and professional capability.
Asna is currently the managing director of MMA and oversees its financial sector division. She has worked at MMA for around 15 years.
The position of managing director was created as part of structural reforms introduced under Governor Ahmed Munawwar.
Under the new structure, managing directors are responsible for overseeing individual departments within the agency, with appointments made for two five-year terms.
