Maldives Corrections Service has stated that it is investigating the matter of former President Abdulla Yameen attending a campaign event held in Hulhumale' despite being prohibited from engaging in political activities.

Yameen is currently under house arrest, with provisional leniencies, granted while serving an 11-year prison sentence on charges of money laundering and bribery.

A video showing Yameen participating in a campaign event held by a candidate for a Hulhumale' constituency endorsed by his People's National Front (PNF) party has been circulating on social media.

Yameen has also been consistently participating in PNF party gatherings and speaking at these.

As these actions are clearly in violation of the conditions of leniency granted to the former President, media has repeatedly enquired of the Maldives Correctional Services about what action they intend to take against it.

However, the response remains, even to date, that they are conducting investigations into the matter. It is unclear whether any action has been taken previously regarding these actions.
