Former President Abdulla Yameen, currently serving an 11-year prison sentence on charges of money laundering and bribery, arrived at the People's National Front (PNF) office on Sunday night despite being prohibited from engaging in political activities.
Yameen visited the PNF office to officially join the party. A special ceremony was conducted at the party office and media coverage was invited.
Corrections media official Aminath Yusreen Ahmed stated that they are investigating Yameen's visit to the PNF office. However, she did not provide further details.
Yameen, who is serving a prison sentence for accepting bribes and money laundering in the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah, was transferred to his home after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the Presidential election held on September 30.
After being transferred to his home, he visited the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) office almost every night and held political rallies, violating the Prisons and Parole Act. Corrections had warned of lifting the privileges if the pledge was violated.
This is the second time the corrections department has said that it is investigating Yameen's case. Despite his previous visit to the party office being investigated, they did not specify whether any action was taken.
