Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef has announced that the government will distribute government issued staple foods (rice and flour), to every household for the month of Ramadan.

The distribution of staple food to households for the upcoming month of Ramadan was announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. However, concerns have been raised over the need for registration as Male' City Council announced that households in the Greater Male' area wishing to receive flour and rice contributions from the government will need to register next week.

In response to concerns raised on social media, Minister Shareef addressed the issue on X, stating that arrangements will be made to provide government-issued staples to households in the Greater Male' area without the need for registration.

The Male' City Council initially announced on Thursday that households in Male', Villimale', and Hulhumale' should register before February 25 for the distribution of staples. According to the announcement, each residential household in the Maldives would receive 10 kg of rice and 10 kg of flour. However, the Council later canceled the announcement.

The Council said that the announcement was revoked to establish a dedicated portal for individuals interested in receiving rice and flour contributions to register, stating that applications through this platform will begin by Monday.
