Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail explained that the party does not intend to form a coalition with The Democrats and contest together for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

He made these comments after announcing that the two parties will be working collaboratively in parliament as an opposition aiming to hold the government accountable.

"We are not trying to get married here. We are only planning to collaborate at the present time to address some concerns we share," Fayyaz said.

He confirmed that candidates from MDP will be contesting for all constituencies in the upcoming parliamentary elections, adding that The Democrats, too, would be independently running in any constituencies they choose to.

"The results of our work will be that people once again clearly see what is going on, and so decide to not let the government win a parliamentary majority. That means that some of their [The Democrats] seats may be won, or some of ours may be won," the Chairperson explained.

While Fayyaz has stated that there is no intention of running for parliament together, The Democrats' Parliamentary Group Leader Ali Azim said that the parties had not even held any deliberations on the topic.

"So far our two parties have not discussed anything about running for parliament together, or dividing constituencies," Azim said.

The two parties announced today that they will be collaborating as a responsible opposition, aiming to hold the government accountable. They have also said that they will be jointly submitting some pertinent bills to the parliament.
