Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats have announced that they will be working collaboratively as an opposition party.

In a joint press conference held today, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said that the actions of the current administration are deeply concerning. He believes that if the government succeeds in winning a majority in the upcoming parliamentary election, they may aim to restrict several rights currently guaranteed by law.

Fayyaz said that this is why the two parties had decided to work together, with the intention of holding the government accountable through the parliament.

"It is because this state of things are worrying that we have decided to work collaboratively as a responsible opposition in the parliament, with the aim of holding the government accountable, in line, and also to bring about the necessary changes in law to ensure the democratic future of this country," Fayyaz stated.

The Democrats' President Hassan Latheef expressed concerns about the rising number of political appointments in this administration. He also claimed that the administration's foreign policy is compiled in a manner that would prove harmful to Maldivians.

"The biggest concern about this government is that their foreign policy is shaped in a very harmful manner, with the nation's policy clashing, and aimed to do so, with that of a strong power," Latheef said.

Hassan Latheef revealed that the two opposition parties have commenced work now to draft amendments to some laws.nno
