President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to fix the rate of electricity.

According to president Solih, with this change, electricity rates charged to consumers will remain within fixed brackets, irrespective of their usage.

President Solih made the pledge after opening a new campaign hub for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Thursday evening, September 21.

Speaking at the event, president Solih addressed the most frequently voiced concern among the residents, which was the rising prices of essential necessities. He highlighted that a majority of the public had urged him to find a solution to the escalating cost of electricity.

President Solih said that the current electricity rate policies are based on consumption, a system he intends to revise.

"We have decided to set a flat rate for all local residences on their electricity consumption. No matter the usage, the electricity charges will not increase," president Solih added.

He said this decision was aimed to equalize the electricity tariff for all residences.

Electricity rates have increased owing to the policies used to charge for them, which in turn is related to the inflated expenditure of power output equipment and facilities.
