Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdul Aziz is currently scheduled to visit the Maldives next Saturday during his five-nation tour of Asia, Mihaaru has found out.

Neither the government of the Maldives nor the Embassy of Saudi Arabia have disclosed official details of the impending visit. However, Mihaaru understands that the Saudi monarch will arrive in the Maldives coming Saturday and commence bilateral talks as well as sign agreements to aid the Maldives in various sectors, including health, education and trade.

Meanwhile, preparations to lay out a red carpet welcome for the Saudi monarch and his accompanying delegation are in full swing at the presidential Izzuddin Jetty and Republic Square in capital Male. The island’s perimeter road of Boduthakurufaanu Magu has also been repaired and decorated to receive the king.

Saudi military are currently active in the Maldives to oversee the security of the king during his visit. Two naval frigates and a helicopter of Saudi Arabia arrived in the archipelago last week.

Moreover, a number of Saudi media representatives have also arrived to cover the event.

According to foreign media reports, King Salman will set off for Japan on Sunday during his tour. After a three-day stay, the king will next head to China before turning to the Maldives.

Media reports also state that King Salman will enjoy a five-day vacation at a resort after ending official meetings in the President’s Office in Male. He will depart from the Maldives to take part in the Arab summit to be hosted in Jordan from March 23-29.

The impending trip will be King Salman’s first official visit to the Maldives as the Saudi monarch. He had previously spent a vacation in the archipelago in 2015 when he was the defence minister, and made an official visit in 2014.
