King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia has congratulated President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on winning the Presidential Election held on September 23.
According to a statement released by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, King Salman extended his greetings to Solih via a phone call on Sunday, during which the monarch discussed to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
The statement read that Solih thanked the king, and expressed hopes to work closely with Saudi Arabia in various areas.
Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz has also congratulated the new president-elect, while a representative of King Salman extended greetings to Solih on behalf of the monarch last week.
The Maldives enjoys close relations with Saudi Arabia, which were notably strengthened during the tenure of outgoing President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The kingdom also increased support and aid to the Maldives after King Salman came to power, further enhancing bilateral ties.
Solih won the Presidential Election against incumbent President Yameen last week, earning a majority of 58.4 percent votes in his favour. In the wake of his victory, several world leaders have congratulated the new president-elect, including the United States, China, Russia and neighbouring India.
