The Bangladeshi Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr A. K. Abdul Momen paid a courtesy call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday afternoon.
During the meeting held at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka, President Solih expressed his gratitude to the Bangladeshi government for the continued support extended to the Maldives in various areas.
He highlighted the most recent assistance during the Covid-19 pandemic when the Bangladeshi government provided Maldives with grant aid as well as two deployments of the Bangladeshi Air Force’s medical teams.
Noting the assistances provided by Bangladesh played a prominent role in managing the Covid-19 situation in Maldives more effectively.
In response to this, the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister stated that it was their pleasure to assist the Maldives in managing the Covid-19 situation.
Additionally, he recognised and admired the Maldivian government's efforts in regularising and repatriating Bangladeshi workers in Maldives.
The leaders spoke at length on the great value accorded by both countries to bolstering the existing mutual relationship between both countries.
Focal point of the discussions held at the meeting was fostering bilateral ties and developmental corporation, particularly in commerce, human resource development, international cooperation, and mutual areas of interest.
Moreover, President Solih gave the assurance that his government would ensure the safety and wellbeing of Bangladeshi citizens residing in the Maldives. He reemphasised his commitment to vaccinate all eligible individuals, including all migrant workers in the Maldives, free of charge, as soon as possible.
Dr Momen also noted President Solih was the first state dignitary to have visited the country during such trying times and displayed the confidence he has in Bangladesh.
The President and the Foreign Minister concluded the call with the hope of further developing the existing relations between both countries.
Earlier in the day, President Solih visited the National Martyrs’ Memorial and Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka, where he attended a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the heroism and patriotism of those who sacrificed their lives to win Bangladesh’s independence. He also signed the visitor’s book and planted a sapling at the site.
He then visited Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and toured the museum grounds.
President Solih is currently in Bangladesh on a three-day state visit. He is accompanied by First Lady Fazna Ahmed and a high-level delegation.
